KC, a chihuahua-cairns terrier cross, had called round to Eric’s for her regular cheddar cheese treat.
Seeing the 68-year-old lying on the floor after his artificial knee gave way, KC alerted her owner Brian Cleaver to help Eric to get back on his feet.
Retired labourer Eric said: “If it hadn’t been for her I could have been there for hours. It’s quite remarkable.
“I’ve got her a medal, it’s engraved and in a star shape because she’s a star.”
“She’s only a very small dog but she found him, and dragged Brian down the corridor,” Eric said.
“He came in and I was just trying to get myself in my chair.”
Eric fell flat on his back, banging his head as he hit the floor.
He was left with bruising to his back, but said that he didn’t need hospital treatment.
“I’m just so thankful to her,” he said, “she’s a feisty little thing, I can’t thank her enough.”
