A female pit bull that was shot by an intruder while protecting her family at their Accomack County home early last Tuesday morning was to return to her family family on Monday.
"She went straight for him," said Dr. Michele Leatherbury, owner of Atlantic Animal Hospital here, said of the dog’s reaction to an armed man who aimed a shotgun at a family member.
Leatherbury was called by the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office at 1:30 a.m. on July 23 following the shooting.
The dog’s owner, who lives near Painter, “felt like she had saved his life,” Leatherbury said.

The dog has an “excellent” prognosis, she said. And despite her breed — pit bulls sometimes are known for their aggressive behavior — Leatherbury said the dog was “wonderful.”
"She doesn’t appear to be aggressive in any way," she said. "She’s sweet."

Although she was severely injured, Lefty appears to have recovered from her scary ordeal. She is a hero. Click here for the full story and here for more about the Atlantic Animal Hospital (Photo from their Facebook page).
