A woman named Barbara Garcia was being interviewed by CBS and was telling the reporter how she survived the tornado. However, she said her dog was lost in the rubble. Just then, someone spotted the dog buried under some debris and Garcia was reunited with her beloved pet.
Bassist David Flinn from the band Chelsea Grin recently appealed for help because his dog, Solo, suffered an injury. Solo broke three fingers and his growth plate and required surgery costing about $2,300. Word spread, and fans of the band raised more than what was needed for Solo’s treatment in just a few hours. Here’s Flinn’s response:

You are the best fans in the world and I promise with every ounce of my being that I will make it up to you all. I love you all and cant wait to see you at a show. I will update you with videos and pictures od how solo is doing. Once again thank you soooo sooooo sooooo sooooo soooo soooo soooo sooo much!!!!!!!!!!!

Professional ice hockey player David Backes and his wife Kelly recently piloted a plane to transport three dogs in danger of being euthanized from Iowa to a no-kill dog shelter in Illinois. Backes is the center for the St. Louis Blues but is also very active with charity work through The David & Kelly Backes Foundation. In this instance, he assisted the West Hancock Canine Rescue and Five Acres Animal Shelter with the transport. Here’s more from KHQA:

Backes and his wife Kelly and a friend flew into the Keokuk Municipal Airport to help the West Hancock Canine Rescue find new homes for three dogs. One of them was Meaty the Rottweiler, who cozied up to Kelly in the back of the plane in anticipation of the flight.

The West Hancock Canine Rescue woks with no-kill rescues like The David & Kelly Backes Foundation to transport dogs to safe shelters and foster locations.

Back in St. Louis, the foundation and their partner the Five Acres Animal Shelter (formerly the St. Charles Humane Society) will help find the dogs loving forever homes.

Hopefully these dogs all find wonderful homes.
This is my super tiny (15 year old?) miniature dachshund, Lump. He’s named after Picasso’s dachshund, of course. Lump came into my life over 2 years ago from the Pasadena Humane Society where I volunteer taking photos for their website. He had been severely neglected most of his long life. Lump was underweight, had terrible fly stike on both ears and was in the process of losing most of his rotten teeth. He had also been hit by a car prior to being picked up by the shelter so his pelvis was messed up and his front paw was broken. We also found out later that he had a raging kidney infection. Poor little man!

Today, Lump is very healthy and is the love of my life. He’s finally living the life he was supposed to live along side my other rescue mutts.

BRITISH WOMAN ADOPTS MAIMED STREET DOG FROM ROMANIA -...

BRITISH WOMAN ADOPTS MAIMED STREET DOG FROM ROMANIA - “Caroline Sugrue agreed to provide a home for nine-month-old Roxy, who lost the whole of her front left leg and half of her back left leg six months ago when she was hit by a car in the Eastern European country.”

A stray dog in Romania named Roxy was hit by a car and lost her front leg and part of her back leg. Fortunately, Roxy was rescued by an organization called Blind Dog Rescue UK and transported to England to a new home. Here’s more from stratford-herald.com:

“The woman who was looking after her couldn’t afford to save her and nobody else wanted her,” Caroline told the Herald. “She was going to be put down.”

The dog charity sent Caroline a photo of Roxy and asked her if she could help. She said: “I looked at her face and that was it, I loved her.”

The pair met on Saturday night and Roxy, shy around everyone else, immediately took to her new owner.

Stuck on the sofa unable to walk far on two paws, Caroline will have to take Roxy to the vet to have a prosthetic boot fitted on her back left leg to help her get around.

“She does quite well though, I had visions of her standing there and toppling over,” said the Tiddington woman who runs a cleaning business in Stratford.

Having temporarily fostered 17 dogs over the past four years, she already has three others waiting for new homes at her house on Knight’s Lane.

However, having only been in the country for a few days after such a traumatic experience in Romania, it’s taking time for Roxy to make friends, and because of her unique situation and timid personality, Caroline does not expect her to be rehomed. “She’s probably going to have to stay here,” she said.

Despite her traumatic past, Roxy now has a chance at a wonderful life with her new owner. She licked his face, wagging her tail furiously.”

Marine Sgt. Ross Gundlach served in Afghanistan with his bomb-sniffing partner, Casey. She is a four-year-old Yellow Labrador. Sgt. Gundlach returned to the U.S., but Casey was sent to work at the Iowa State Fire Marshall’s Office. Sgt. Gundlach wanted to adopt Casey and had been campaigning to get her back. Officials set up a fake event at the Iowa State Capitol and reunited Casey with her beloved partner. Here’s more from ABC News:

“I promised her if we made it out of alive, I’d do whatever it took to find her,” Gundlach said.

On Friday, he made good on that vow with help from some sentimental state officials in Iowa who know how to pull off a surprise.

Since leaving active duty to take classes at the University of Wisconsin this summer, Gundlach, of Madison, Wis., had been seeking to adopt 4-year-old Casey.

***

“It was a total surprise,” he said. “I owe her. I’ll just try to give her the best life I can.”

His father, Glen Gundlach, seemed just as surprised.

“It’s unbelievable … the state of Iowa, I love ‘em,” he said.

Gov. Terry Branstad officially retired Casey from active duty during Friday’s ceremony, thanking the dog for a “job well done.”

During the 150 missions they performed together, Gundlach said Casey never missed an explosive — she caught three before they could be detonated. He credits her for making it back home safely.

“I wouldn’t be here … any kids I ever had wouldn’t exist if Casey hadn’t been here,” he said.

Casey and her beloved owner are finally back together. Hopefully they spend many wonderful years together.
A Dachshund named Captain Morgan was in a high kill shelter in Alabama living in bad conditions. In addition, he suffered from heartworm and only had one good eye. An organization called Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue arranged for Captain Morgan to be rescued. A woman named Eva Armstrong took Captain Morgan in and cared for him. Fortunately, he was adopted by a family in New York. Recently, Armstrong and Captain Morgan had the opportunity to see each other again. Here’s more from the New York Daily News:

Captain Morgan was kept on a cold concrete floor with no heat or hot water. During bath time, the one-eyed dachshund was sprayed with frigid water from a hose. The pound had limited resources, so Cappy’s heartworm was not properly treated, Armstrong said.

***

On the same day that Cappy was rescued, the organization managed to pull around 30 other dogs.

“We really want people to understand the urgency here,” Cross told the News. “You either take the dog or the dog gets killed the next day. There’s no other option.”

In New York, Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue hosts adoption events that help place these dogs in loving homes.

Cappy stayed with Armstrong for one month while receiving treatment for his heartworm. He slept in her bed, watched TV with her and walked around Prospect Park getting accustomed to a normal puppy life.

An American Eskimo dog named Sparky somehow escaped from his elderly owner and was wandering around on train tracks in New Jersey. Transit workers saw Sparky, stopped the train, and rescued him. Fortunately Sparky has been safely returned home. Read more from ABC News:

Sparky’s adventure began when he accidentally got out of his house in Garfield and ran away.

Lost and confused, a collar-less Sparky made his way to the Garfield train station, wandering the tracks during rush hour.

That’s when the crew on train 1254 heading to Hoboken saw him cowering.

But instead of ignoring the plight of yet another stray dog, they stopped the train, got out and rescued him.

They then took Sparky on the train and brought him to Hoboken.

“I met the train when it came into Hoboken Depot,” said NJ Senior Train Master Sean Kushnir. “I secured the dog. Immediately the dog was a big hit, all the passengers were waiting with their cell phones taking pictures.”

Sounds like Sparky was rescued by a great group of guys. Now, she’s treating the baby cat like her own pup…”

A dog in Anderson, South Carolina, is believed to have saved an abandoned kitten from a ravine. Animal control officers discovered the dog nursing the kitten. They have been taken in by Anderson County PAWS and authorities are searching for the owner of the dog. Read more from foxcarolina.com:

She said the neighbor had been hearing a dog’s bark since Saturday morning. To find the animal, Smith needed to follow the bark and climb down an embankment to reach her.

She wasn’t expecting to find the dog with another furry friend.

“I think it would’ve been OK for the dog to walk down the hill. I got down there, so it should be pretty easy for the dog, but I’m thinking it just couldn’t get back up with the kitten, and I don’t think it was willing to leave the kitten,” Smith said.

PAWS animal rescue in Anderson is keeping the duo. They said the dog is at least 5 years old, in good health, freshly groomed and has a collar. The dog has been treating the weeks-old kitten as her own, cleaning, tending and nursing her. PAWS Director Jessica Cwynar said the dog is likely going through a pseudo-pregnancy to produce milk. She said it’s not enough to provide for the kitten, so they are also bottle feeding the cat.

Smith said in 17 years working with animals, she doesn’t usually see different types of animals become friends like this and has never seen a dog nurse a kitten.

Hopefully this dog and kitten are adopted together, if possible. Another example of dog heroism.
A four-year-old Border Collie/Pointer mix in Canada named Snickers broke out of the house and ran to get help from a neighbor after his owner collapsed from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Fortunately, the neighbor saw Snickers and alerted authorities. Snickers was rescued by his current owner after having been abused. Snickers was recently inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame for his heroism. Here’s more from mississauga.com:

Early one morning in March 2012, Snickers was found pacing in a neighbour’s driveway, barking incessantly and blocking the neighbour when he tried to leave for work.

The neighbour called the police, and Const. Rob Garnett and his partner responded.

“He noticed the dog was going from one house to the other,” said Gould’s son, Jeff Gould.

***

“Snickers ran in and sat beside my dad until the paramedics took him away,” said the owner’s son, grateful that Snickers saved his father’s life.

Jeff Gould said it was clear that Snickers had banged against the door repeatedly until he was able to break some of the glass and open the latch to get outside.

But that wasn’t the dog’s only obstacle to getting help that morning.

“He broke down the barricade in the back yard,” he said…Gould had rescued Snickers when he was abused and needed a home.

“My father has always rescued animals … It was his turn to be rescued,” said Jeff Gould.
