INTRODUCE YOUR DOG - TheDog Journal requests submissions!

I’ve been traveling so sorry for the sporadic updates. In the meantime, as a huge “thank you” to all of my followers, I’d like to learn more about your dogs.  Please click on the “Submit” button and send a picture of your dogs and a short description of your dog (breed, how you got it, why your dog is awesome, or anything else you want).  I’ll be looking forward to reading them (if I get any)!

As for myself, my dog is a 10-year-old miniature schnauzer. He is the first dog I ever had because my parents lied to me from childhood and told me I was allergic to dogs — but I wasn’t. They lied so I wouldn’t pester them to get a dog (?!?!) So as soon as I learned the truth I went and got him. I love him more than anything.

DOG RECEIVES AWARD FOR SAVING STRUGGLING SWIMMER - “KPD recognizes “Umis” for his life-saving efforts and awarded him a K-9 Life-Saving award.”
A 9-year-old girl in Wisconsin jumped into a lake from her boat in an attempt to swim to shore, but soon started to struggle. Her dog, named Umis, jumped into the water and pulled her to shore. Here’s more from waow.com:

Hannah was out on this boat with her cousin when the wind started pushing them far away from shore…Her mom said Umis could tell Hannah was struggling.
“It was scary because the wind was picking up and you really can’t do a whole lot when you’re on a lake and it’s windy,” said Jackie.
“After five minutes, I was freezing and getting tired,” said Hannah. “And then Umis jumped in the water and he went under and then he came up from under me and I was able to put the rope around him and he pulled us to shore. I think it’s pretty awesome that he saved me and my cousin’s life.”

Once again, a dog comes through to save the day. Umis recently received a commendation from the Kronenwetter Police Department. Click here for the full story and a video news report.

IN THE DOGHOUSE

LONE PUPPY SURVIVES MASS DOG KILLING -“They are not just pieces of meat with four legs and a tail.”
Two men in New Zealand were recently found guilty of shooting 12 dogs and 21 puppies on a neighbor’s property. A dog named “Chicken” was the only surviving puppy. Here’s the story from The New Zealand Herald:

Dog owner Rowan Hargreaves says he will never forget the day two of his neighbours - who were convicted today of animal ill-treatment - drove on to his property and shot dead 33 of his “friends and family”.
Speaking from his work in Wellsford today, the mechanic rattled off the names of 12 of his adult dogs shot dead in their cage by Tony Campbell and Russell Mendoza.
The pair were convicted today of recklessly firing a gun and four counts each of wilful ill-treating an animal after they shot the 12 caged dogs and 21 puppies in January, 2010.
***
The men were undeterred as the dogs yelped and tried to hide under the bodies of their companions…Mr Hargreaves said tonight he had new dogs but they would never replace his former companions.
He said the sentence facing the convicted men was not for him to decide but he hoped it sent a clear message about how people treated animals.

Hopefully Chicken will be able to provide comfort to his owner despite the horrible incident. Click here for the full story, but don’t read the article if you don’t want to know about the horrific details. Humans suck sometimes.

LABRADOR SAVED WITH SPECIAL CANINE OXYGEN MASK - “We can take this device, put it over his snout and hook him up to an oxygen bottle and flow oxygen into the mask”
Firefighters saved a Yellow Labrador named Skylar from a house fire. The rescuers used a special oxygen mask designed specifically for dogs. Fortunately, it looks like Skylar will recover and he is currently at the vet’s office in an oxygen crate. Read more from myfoxdetroit.com:

Right now, Skylar is only able to sit and watch the world go by. The yellow lab is contained to an oxygen chamber after being trapped in her family’s burning home.
“Skylar came in with severe smoke inhalation and severe burns to her nose. She has corneal burns and she had carbon monoxide poisoning when she came in,” said Dr. Judy Fleischaker with Oakland County Veterinary Services.
***
“They came across the dog. He was unconsciousness, but he was still breathing,” says Jim Harrison with the Canton fire department. “They brought the dog out into the front yard and placed an oxygen mask on him.”

Let’s hope Skylar recovers quickly. It’s great to hear that some fire departments have equipment just for animals, although I suspect it’s somewhat rare. Click here for the full story.

HUMAN YAWNS ARE CONTAGIOUS TO DOGS - “canines yawned five times more often when they heard humans they knew yawning”
According to a study by the University of Porto in Portugal, dogs are more likely to yawn after they hear a familiar human yawn. Researchers believe this may mean that dogs can empathize with humans. Here’s more from sciencemag.org:

Now a new study finds that dogs yawn even when they only hear the sound of us yawning, the strongest evidence yet that canines may be able to empathize with us…The team, led by behavioral biologist Karine Silva, recorded yawning sounds of the dogs’ owners and an unfamiliar woman as well as an artificial control sound consisting of a computer-reversed yawn…During the sessions, the researchers measured the number of elicited yawns in dogs in response to sounds from known and unknown people…“These results suggest that dogs have the capacity to empathize with humans,” says Silva.

Anyone else notice this phenomenon? Also, I wish I could be paid to watch dogs yawn! Click here for the full story. (Photo by the Dog Journal - my dog!)

MEDIC HELPS HEART ATTACK VICTIM, THEN TAKES CARE OF HIS DOG - “I wanted to protect the dog.”
Not only did Roberta O’Donnell, an Emergency Medical Technician, respond to a heart attack call with her ambulance, she also took care of the worried victim’s dog for three days. King, a Jack Russell Terrier, belongs to a truck driver who had to pull over suddenly due to a mild heart attack. When the ambulance responded, King’s owner expressed his concern for the dog and so O’Donnell agreed to look after King. Here’s more from the ctpost.com:

Plott, 49, is a truck driver for Alabama Motor Express, based in Ashford, Ala., and frequently takes King on runs with him. “He goes where daddy goes,” Plott said.
***
It turned out that Plott had a mild heart attack. When emergency personnel arrived, they urged Plott to go to Bridgeport Hospital immediately.
But he was reluctant. “He really didn’t want to go because he didn’t want to leave his dog,” said Roberta O’Donnelll, an emergency medical technician from American Medical Response…When it turned out Plott had to be admitted to Bridgeport Hospital, O’Donnell did what had to be done — she took King to her home…watched him until Plott was back on his feet.

Fortunately, King’s owner has recovered and is reunited with his beloved pet. The EMT did a great thing by going out of her way to care for a stranger’s dog. Click here for the full story.

STUDY ON DOGS AT THE WORKPLACE - “…stress significantly rose during the day when owners left their dogs at home compared to days they brought them to work.”

According to a preliminary study by Virginia Commonwealth University, people who bring their dogs to work have lower stress levels than those who do not. In fact, the stress levels for people who own dogs but do not bring them to work became even higher during the day (because of the sadness of having to leave your dog at home). Here’s more from the official website of VCU:

Stress is a major contributor to employee absenteeism, morale and burnout and results in significant loss of productivity and resources. But a preliminary study, published in the March issue of the International Journal of Workplace Health Management, found that dogs in the workplace may buffer the impact of stress during the workday for their owners and make the job more satisfying for those with whom they come into contact.

***

The VCU researchers compared employees who bring their dogs to work, employees who do not bring their dogs to work and employees without pets in the areas of stress, job satisfaction, organizational commitment and support.

I start missing my dog the instant I leave the house in the morning, so I understand the results of this study. Click here for more about the study.

DOG GETS OWN WINE LABEL FOR CHARITY -I couldn’t help thinking of the lonely dogs in our Humane Society shelter waiting for a new home.”

Rafa, a Portuguese Water Dog, is featured on specially labeled bottles of wine which are being sold to benefit the Edmonton Humane Society in Canada. The wine label is called “Rafa’s Red,” and thanks to Rafa’s image, over $10,000 has been raised so far. Read more from the Edmonton Journal:

When the winery agreed to help create a specially labelled bottle, Gummer looked no further than 16-month-old Rafa, most often at his feet in the Riverbend store…“We ordered half a palate — 23 cases — of Rafa Red before Christmas and it flew off the shelves,” says Gummer, who has always owned a dog, even during his university years.

“We later ordered a full palate and have only 11 cases left.

***

Shawna Randolphat the Edmonton Humane Society says the shelter takes in 13,000 animals every year and many often need medical attention.

“David’s generosity will significantly help the work we do,” she says. “The basics we provide include food, water, care and heated shelter.

“Animals are also spayed and neutered before they are released in the community. “Adoption fees are low and don’t cover the entire cost of looking after an animal. Rafa is making a huge difference.”

I happen to like wine and I obviously love dogs so this sounds perfect to me. Thanks to Rafa and the Vines Wine Merchants, thousands of dollars will be raised to help other dogs in Edmonton. Click here for the full story, and click here to learn more about the Edmonton Humane Society.
